1

Rinse your brewer, French press or pour-over cone after every use. Coffee oils turn stale and rancid quickly and carry into the next cup.

2

Descale kettles and machines every one to three months, depending on how hard your water is. A citric acid descaler is gentle and leaves no lingering taste.

3

Brush out your grinder every couple of weeks. Old grounds and oil build up around the burrs and dull the flavor of fresh beans.

4

Espresso machines need the group head and shower screen wiped daily and a backflush now and then, if your machine allows it.

5

Change water filters on schedule. Since coffee is more than 98 percent water, better water makes a better cup.
